Gross Only Specimens

The following specimens are considered gross only specimens in our laboratory.  The gross only examination will include macroscopic examination, description, and diagnosis of the material received.

  • Accessory bones and digits.
  • Acromio-clavicular joint.
  • Arthroscopic shavings.
  • Bones for degenerative arthritis/OA
  • Breast implant.
  • Bullets.
  • Bunions/claw toes/hammer toes.
  • Calculi, usually submitted for chemical analysis unless stated otherwise.
  • Common bile duct stone.
  • Foreign objects/foreign body.
  • Gallstones
  • Lenses.
  • Meniscus.
  • Nasal septum.
  • Orthopedic hardware.
  • Ossicles of the ear.
  • Panniculectomy tissue.
  • Parasites.
  • Prosthetic material (metallic or synthetic).
  • Rib- incidental removal.
  • Scar tissue from plastic surgery.
  • Skin- cosmetic tissue.
  • Teeth.
  • Tissue from rotator cuff repair.
  • Toenail and fingernails.
  • Tonsils and adenoids 17 and under.
  • Traumatic amputation specimens (extremity, fingers, toes) and debridement tissue from trauma.
  • Uvula from sleep apnea.
  • Vaginal mucosa for repair.
  • Varicose veins.
  • Any structure, tissue or material not specifically mentioned above, that in the opinion of a board certified pathologist does not require microscopic examination.

A gross exam will only be performed at the discretion of the clinician. Gross-only exam must be explicitly documented on the requisition by the clinician.

Dahl-Chase Pathology Associates reserves the right to histologically exam any specimen submitted for gross only exam. The pathologist may deem it necessary to microscopically exam any specimen to achieve an accurate diagnosis.
