Unacceptable Specimens for Flow Cytometry
Most specimens for flow cytometric analysis should be analyzed within 24 hours to maintain optimal viability of the cells. This may not always be possible and the ordering labs should contact the flow cytometry lab to determine the best course of action to transport the specimen to the lab as soon as possible (e.g. special courier etc) and to determine which assays can be stored longer without significant impact on viability.
- Specimens received in the improper transport medium or anticoagulant may or may not be processed depending upon the viability of the specimen. For instance, a specimen that is placed in formalin (even for a short period of time), will affect the viability of the sample and will result in suboptimal results. If this should occur, please notify the flow cytometry lab (941-8282) and document this information on the requisition.
- If the incorrect transport medium or anticoagulant is used and we are unable to process the specimen, the client will be notified immediately and it will be noted on the report.
- Unlabeled or incorrectly labeled irretrievable specimens may be verified with the provider who obtained the specimen and will be asked to accept responsibility for labeling by fax, however, if the specimen is retrievable, we will ask that it be re-collected.
- Specimens which are not received within the recommended time, may not meet the stability criteria for optimal results.
- a. Irretrievable specimens may be processed and report will include a note that results may have been compromised by suboptimal specimen conditions.
- b. If the specimen is retrievable the lab will determine if the sample can be processed and reported, but may reserve the right to cancel the test. The client twill be notified immediately and the report will be issues stating the reasons.
