Cytogenetics Testing
Requests may be made to send a portion of products of conception for chromosome analysis. This test is not performed by Dahl-Chase Diagnostic Services. Cytogenetics testing is referred to ARUP laboratories and is sent out through Northern Light Laboratory.
Clinicians should be encouraged to take samples of villous or fetal tissue at the point of care to be sent out through Northern Light Laboratories send out department (973-6900). Sampling the tissue at the point of care provides the following benefits:
- The tissue is more viable, especially if it is placed directly into RPMI media.
- The tissue is the most sterile.
- The handling of the specimen is limited.
All these factor increases the acceptability of the specimen for testing.
Dahl-Chase Diagnostic Services is also capable of splitting the tissue for routine histology processing and cytogenetic testing. The tissue must be sent in a sterile container, with sterile saline to the surgical pathology department as soon as possible. Specimens received in fixative will not be acceptable for routine cytogenetics testing. The requisition must state which cytogenetics testing is requested and a demographics sheet must accompany the specimen. The final cytogenetics report will be sent directly to the clinician and not be added as an addendum to the Dahl-Chase pathology report.
